Nā Wai Puapua`i: Care for the Future

Many thanks to the
State of Hawaii
Department of Commerce and Consumer Affairs
Office of the Securities Commissioner

for generously funding this program.

Nā Wai Puapua`i is a comprehensive K-12 financial literacy, standards-based curriculum developed for students living in Hawai`i. The lessons focus on the importance of decision-making in order to manage money successfully. Each set of lessons includes two ōlelo no`eau that are used to link the Native Hawaiian culture to financial literacy concepts.

Nā Wai Puapua’i was selected as the name of the curriculum for it means the bubbling fresh waters that well up from the earth. The concept of wai, or fresh water, is synonymous with economic wealth and stability.

The lessons in the curriculum are designed to introduce elementary through high school students to the basic concepts of money management. Each lesson is aligned to the Jump$tart Financial Literacy Standards, the National Voluntary Economics Standards, the Hawai`i State Department of Education Content Performance Standards (HCPS III) and the General Learner Objectives. In addition to the focus on financial literacy, each curriculum level includes two ōlelo no`eau that link to the theme of the Nā Wai Puapua`i: Care for the Future.

Participants will receive a free copy of the NWPP curriculum and strategies for implementing the lesson plans.
